“And just like that, COVID-19 is over!” exclaimed an exasperated social media blogger after watching media coverage shift from “everything pandemic” to a 24/7 news feed on the racial tensions, protests, and riots surrounding the tragic death of George Floyd under the knee of a cop on May 25, 2020.

No, the pandemic is not over; but its grip on the US news cycle is.

After three months of coronavirus restrictions in the US—including the shutdown of all schools and many businesses—the pandemic seemed to be the last thing on protestors’ minds. Health officials watched with mounting concern as the streets of cities that transported hundreds of COVID-19 victims to makeshift morgues filled with throngs of protestors. Where protesting turned violent, some of the very businesses affected by COVID-19 restrictions were looted and/or burned.
