5 Spiritual Principles for Trying the Spirits

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1

By Betsy Mayer

If God and the heavenly angels were the only source of supernatural activity in our world, we wouldn’t need to “try the spirits!” But John’s warning reminds us that we’re caught in a war between two opposing powers who’re seeking our allegiance.

While God will only use truth, Satan uses deception. John also warns us about an end-time confederacy of evil actors, controlled by demons, working to deceive the entire world:

“And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.” Rev. 16:13, 14.
