Only when the love of God controls us can we find emotional balance through the ups and downs of life.

While studying at Sydney University in Australia, both of us were avid sportsmen. Our heavy involvement in table tennis produced great emotional tension. We swung from heightened elation when we won to bitter disappointment when we lost. Competition appealed to our pride, anger, selfish ambition, bitterness, and rivalry. It did not bring us closer to Christ and others. Thus, under certain circumstances, even positive emotions, like elation, can have negative consequences. Now, we firmly shun the heightened state of emotional tension that comes with competition.

Human beings experience a wide range of emotions in response to environmental factors that shape their lives.
