David, the warrior, the sweet singer of Israel, loved truth. He was comforted and guided by truth. He saw truth as inseparably linked with God’s presence and His worship. Truth was a place of safety because God was in it.
And God’s truth is light, for without truth there is great darkness.
We find the specific reason for David’s prayer for truth and light in verse 1: “Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.”
In his prayer for deliverance, David doesn’t pray for the destruction of the ungodly and their deceit. He prays instead for God’s truth and light to lead him to where God is and to where wicked persons and their lies cannot come.
