Scientists are increasingly aware that our ability to exist on Earth depends on an exquisite balance of chemistry, physics, and biology. Without this “fine-tuning,” there could be no life. It’s a little like making a successful loaf of bread, where four ingredients and in the right balance are essential: flour, water, yeast, and salt. If the water is too hot, you kill the yeast, and your bread won’t rise. If you don’t use enough salt, the yeast will grow too fast and your loaf will lack structure.
Similarly, research continues to reveal more about a complex “recipe” which appears fine-tuned to support life. Here are a few examples.
Our Planet: “What makes Earth habitable? It is protected from harmful solar radiation by its magnetic field, it is kept warm by an insulating atmosphere, and it has the right chemical ingredients for life, including water and carbon.”1 It
