Two special gifts given to humankind were taken with Adam and Eve from the garden and passed to their descendants. One was temporal, and the other was eternal.
The first gift was marriage, the exclusive one-flesh relationship of a husband and wife. Then God used a portion of Adam’s own flesh to create Eve—his counterpart. This one-flesh relationship is possible for all who enter into the covenant of marriage before God: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Gen. 2:24.
