I should have known better. Waking up that summer morning with some pain, I quickly realized that I was quite unprepared for the birth of our second child. As I brushed up on breathing techniques for labor while gulping down my breakfast, threw together my hospital bag, and watered my plants, I wondered when I should head to the hospital. Not wanting to waste a 90-minute round-trip to the maternity, I called the nurse for advice: she asked me at what intervals my contractions came. By noon the contractions grew thicker and faster. We jumped in the car, and within an hour from arriving, I was holding a lively baby in my arms.
