A Brief Look at Sexual Purity in the Bible

God gave specific instructions regarding sexual purity to preserve social morality and health, as well as to preserve the dignity and rights of individuals and families. This brief overview should be used to encourage deeper study on all that the Bible* has to say on the subject.

The purpose for moral commandments

“See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil in that I command thee this day...to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.” Deut. 30: 15–16.

Monogamy

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall join to his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Gen. 2:24, AKJV.

“Let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.” 1 Cor. 7:2.

“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife.... Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife.” 1 Tim. 3:2,12.

Sexual intercourse

“Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority
